Contact: Captain Patrick Halleran - Public Information Officer, Belmont Police & Fire Departments (650) 595-7430
A fire in an apartment complex on Village Drive this morning damage 2 apartments and displaced 8 residents. There were no injuries and the cause is under investigation.
On Tuesday 2/21/17 at approximately 8:45am, Belmont Fire and Police units responded to a report of a fire at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Village Dr. Upon arrival, first responders found smoke and flames coming from a second floor apartment at the rear of the building. The residents had been alerted by smoke alarms and had evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters.
Belmont firefighters, with the assistance from units from the San Mateo and Foster City Fire Departments, were able to extinguish the fire in approximately 30 minutes. Two apartments were damaged in the fire, the unit where the fire occurred sustained fire and water damage and the unit above it sustained smoke damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the 65 year old resident of the apartment where the fire started told investigators she was getting ready to take a shower, when she heard the smoke alarm. When she investigated, she found a fire in the kitchen. The woman, who lives with her adult son and his girlfriend as well as the family of 5, from the apartment above them, were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
Firefighters were on-scene for approximately 3 hrs and the loss is estimated at $200,000.
