Fire Damages Carlmont High School Gym
Contact: Captain Patrick Halleran, Public Information Officer - Belmont Police & Fire Departments (650) 595-7430
A fire Saturday evening at Carlmont High School damaged a portion of the roof of the gymnasium. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
On Saturday, 6/24/17 at approximately 5:55 PM, Belmont Fire and Police units responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof of the gymnasium at Carlmont High School. Upon arrival, first responders found smoke coming from the roof above the area of the boy's locker room.
As firefighters began suppression operations, police officers evacuated approximately 50 people from the main portion of the gym, who were attending the play-offs for an adult basketball league. The building was evacuated quickly and there were no injuries.
Belmont firefighters were assisted at this 2-alarm fire, by units from the San Mateo, Foster City & Redwood City Fire Departments as well as Cal Fire. Firefighters remained on-scene for approximately 3 hours to ensure the fire was out and had not spread to any other parts of the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but investigators are looking into a possible connection to roofing work that had been done on the building earlier in the day. The main portion of the gymnasium was not affected by the fire and damage to the boys locker room area is estimated at approximately $100,000.
