Belmont Man Injured During Marijuana Robbery
Contact: Captain Patrick Halleran, Public Information Officer - Belmont Police & Fire Departments (650) 595-7430
This evening, a Belmont man was attacked and robbed in the parking lot of the Carlmont Shopping Center, while trying to sell marijuana. The victim was treated for non life-threatening injuries and the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, fled is still outstanding.
This evening, Tuesday 6/27/17 at approximately 6:25PM, Belmont Police responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls of a physical fight in the south parking lot of the Carlmont Shopping Center. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male with non life-threatening injuries. The investigation is in its initial stages, but the following information is known at this time.
The victim, a 22 year old Belmont man, had gone to the shopping center parking lot to sell an as yet undetermined amount of marijuana. During that transaction, the victim was pistol-whipped by a male suspect and the victim's backpack containing the marijuana was taken. The victim was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and was not transported.
The suspect fled from the scene prior to police arrival and an extensive area search was begun. At approximately 7:00PM, an officer spotted the suspect in the 1100 block of Ladera Way. A foot pursuit ensued and the suspect fled into Belmont Creek, and ran west into a culvert that goes under the Carlmont Shopping Center. A shelter in place advisement was put out to the area, while officers searched for the suspect. In spite of an almost 2-hour search, which included a Belmont Police K-9, the suspect eluded capture. The shelter in place was lifted at approximately 8:15PM.
The suspect is described as an Asian or Hispanic male, approximately 5' 6" tall, 160 lbs with a medium complexion with black curly hair and an unknown tattoo on the left side of his neck. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and red knee-length shorts, carrying a black backpack. The suspect was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun.
It should be noted that the suspect description was based on what he looked like when last seen by the pursuing officer. During the robbery, the suspect was wearing additional clothing, which we believe was discarded in the area of Ladera Way, between the time of the robbery and when he was spotted by the officer. Investigators are looking for a dark colored hoodie, light brown or orange sweatpants and a brown ski mask. Residents in the area of the 1100 block of Ladera Way are asked to check their yards and if they find one or more of these items, do not touch them, and call Belmont Police.
Belmont Police want to stress that this was not a random attack, the victim in this case was targeted specifically for the marijuana he had brought to the parking lot to sell. Investigators are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing security cameras in the area for leads. Anyone with information on this suspect or this incident is asked to contact Belmont Police at (650) 595-7400 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
