The Belmont Sewer Division Maintains over 90 miles of sewer mains. The sewer system is comprised of 85 miles of gravity lines, and five miles of force mains; Performs Close Caption Television inspections on 85 miles of gravity sewer mains; Inspects and maintains 11 Sewer Pump Stations; Performs smoke testing to identify defective locations or improper connections in the sanitary sewer system; Provides first response to residents call for house sewer (lateral) drainage problems (approximately 450 calls annually); and responds to and contains sewer spills.

Private Sewer Lateral Information

Time of Sale Requirements:  The City requires a seller to provide prospective buyers with a "Notice to Buyers" advising them that homeowners are responsible for the repair and maintenance of the private sewer lateral. A Sewer Lateral Certificate is not required at time of sale.

Property improvement Requirements for Sewer Laterals:  A Sewer Lateral Certificate is required if you are conducting improvements to your property costing $200,000 or more, or if there is work that causes a change in water service such as adding a second meter or changing the meter size.

Recommended for property owners: The City will issue a Sewer Lateral Certificate for a private sewer lateral in a state of good repair when: The entire sewer lateral has been lawfully constructed within the past 15 years and the City does not suspect that the sewer lateral is in need of repair, or the property owner has shown by testing and inspection to the City's satisfaction that the sewer lateral is in good condition.
